For good YA lit, you can try Kevin Brooks' novels or Carol Plum-Ucci's What Happened to Lani Garver (http://www.amazon.com/What-Happened-Garver-Carol-Plum-Ucci/dp/0152050884/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339142162&sr=1-1). The latter is one of the heavier, deeper YA books I read when I was a teenager, and it's one of my all-time favorites.
I've heard good things about Parks and Recreation from multiple people these past few months, so I'll have to look into it!
